State Level Conference on ‘Addressing Barriers in the Environment and Universal Design’

Introduction:
Creating inclusive society is the ultimate aim set for the nations. Article 9 of UNCRPD Advocates on Accessibility .Accessibility enable the persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life. All the States Parties shall take appropriate measures to ensure to persons with disabilities access, on an equal basis with others, to the physical environment, to transportation, to information and communications, including information and communications technologies and systems, and to other facilities and services open or provided to the public, both in urban and in rural areas.
These measures, which shall include the identification and elimination of obstacles and barriers to accessibility on
(a) Buildings, roads, transportation and other indoor and outdoor facilities, including schools, housing, medical facilities and workplaces
(b) Information, communications and other services, including electronic services and emergency services.
States Parties shall also take appropriate measures to develop, promulgate and monitor the implementation of minimum standards and guidelines for the accessibility of facilities and services open or provided to the public.
To ensure that private entities that offer facilities and services which are open or provided to the public take into account all aspects of accessibility for persons with disabilities To provide training for stakeholders on accessibility issues facing persons with disabilities To provide buildings and other facilities open to the public signage in Braille and in easy to read and understand forms.
Persons with disabilities can access an inclusive, quality and free primary education and secondary education on an equal basis with others in the communities in which they live. Reasonable accommodation of the individual’s requirements is to be provided. This conference will critically identifying the barriers and the strategy for accessing the Infrastructure, Education ,transports and Communication.

OBJECTIVES OF CONFERENCE
• To identify the barriers and to develop various strategies to overcome the barriers in the Environment and Universal Design’ (E&UD)
• To document and disseminate the deliberation of the conference for the stake holders.
• To initiate a spontaneous and sustainable dialogue among governments, research institutions and CBOs, to empower the knowledge in Universal Design.
• Inheriting wisdom and skills across the generations-nurturing members of the next generation to carry on the timeless concept of universal design

Method:
This conference will be organised by ARVI TRUST, with the approval of Rehabilitation council of India, New Delhi, through public announcement. The program will be conducted with the specifications of the program as given in the program schedule.

ARVI:
ARVI started its functioning since 1995. Registered under FCRA Act in 2005, also having 12 AA & 80G. It has established successful partnership with government organizations, Non-Government Organizations & individuals who work with persons with disabilities in Middle and South Zone of Tamil Nadu, ARVI is the nodal agency for implementing the Differently Abled and Vulnerable Development Programs. It work for the Education, Employment/Self Employment and Empowerment (3E’s) of People with Disability.
